2006 bought CNJ an opportunity to report. CNJ is an independent news site. Filled a void created by lay offs at traditional print media. 2010 is bringing revenue sufficient to expand.

Media literacy is dealing w content issues. Lack of reporting on state issues is a serious void.

Uses FB and Twitter to post stories and sometimes to get information.

News industry was reluctant to adopt technology not that long ago. Hard to know what the business model is going to be.

How do people want to get information? Delivery of news directly to consumers is favored by advertisers.

What about opinion journalism? How to separate opinion from the news? CNJ delineates what is opinion and what is fact.

Niche reporting is efficient and can offer depth. But how to get the bigger picture to readers- the public.

Placement of stories on line does not match print.

Lines between journalism and advertising are blurred. Lack of objectivity is a problem.

Example: gombossy exposes sleepy's practices and then is fired because of sleepy's ad revenues.

What happened at the courant? It is highly profitable. What business model will work?

Social media is more social than news.

Papers make up for lack of reporters by using wire services. Local papers often actually cover and report local news.

Younger people are turning away from social media and looking for a paper experience. But papers are not "green" which is troublesome.

People have more options to choose what to read when they read a print edition. They may read headlines and can choose what stories to read fully.

Newspapers spend more money on the paper for printing than they do on their staffs.

Online news is up to the minute but maybe not always accurate.

Fewer people in journalism today. New jobs in different media. Who is doing the editing? No one and no one is fact checking either.

Journalists can use film media - broadcast coverage. Backpack journalism. Reporters need to do everything- research, report,photography, film,etc. How do consumers find these outlets?

Is national journalism a different story?

Only one US reporter in Africa.

The Big Short is an example of a journalist who takes the story to a book format.

Spanish language journalism is print, tv, and online.

How do advertisers pay for for online presence? Based on numbers of hits.
